Hawaiian Quilters Wanted

Tuesday, August 07, 2007

If you are a Hawaiian quilter (someone who actually lives or used to live in Hawaii, not just someone who makes Hawaiian-style quilts) and wouldn't mind helping me with a project, would you please drop me a line?

If you aren't a Hawaiian quilter but know one, would you please put her/him in touch with me?

Thanks in advance.

I am a quilter who lives on the Big Island of Hawaii, in Kona.  I’d love to help you, just let me know what help you need.  Aloha, Ann

I’m beginning quilting again.  I’ve lived in Hawaii most of my life but 3 years in Upper Michigan and 3 years in Omaha.  I prefer hand quilting but machine piecing.  I also enjoy hand appliqueing.  I completed a quilt top using Hawaiian prints and Fons & Porter’s Garden Window design.  Preparing to baste and start hand quilting.  Contemplating purchasing the Heartland floor frame!  I have a regular (large, bullky) quilt frame too!  Any advice?

I quilt & I live in Hawaii.  I live actually on Oahu, in the city of Honolulu, but even further than that I live on historic Ford Island.  I can see the Mighty Missouri Memorial, the Arizona Memorial and the Utah Memorial all in less than a mile from the house!  It is really exciting.  I am about to have a baby this week but will be available in about a week or so.
I have only lived here a short time but I have been quilting for about 10 years now.

I am a member of a Hawaiian quilting group, The Haole Connection.  We have all studied with teachers in Hawaii.  Some grew up in Hawaii and some have lived there.  I hope you have found your help by now.  Our group had its beginnings with Aunt Debbie, Kepola Kakalla who is now deceased.  She was a teacher on Oahu at the Bishop’s museum.  She inspired Marge Kerr who was one of our orginal founders.
Aloha

I was just received an email from a web site for hawaiian
quilts.
KWILTS ‘N KOA (kwiltsnkoa@hawaii.rr.com.).
Kathy Tsark, President she may be able to help you out.

I have not ever tried a Hawaiian quilt, but my daughter brought me back a quilted hawaiian shoulder bag when she went to Hawaii to meet her husband coming home from deployment.
Ever since I have bought several Hawaiian quilted things.
I can’t wait to see if your next book has the quilters doing a quilt with Hawaiian style.
Love your books, can not wait for the next one.
Best of luck with your next adventure.

Hi Jennifer,
I grew up in Hawaii and have made Hawaiian quilts. I’ve learned techniques and what needles to use in the meanwhile. Don’t hesitate to ask me any questions. If I don’t know the answer, I’ll find out. Still many ties to the Islands.
